The Battle
The Attack on the Radar ChainWith the Luftwaffe armed and loaded, they started their invasion. On August 13, 1940 the Luftwaffe attacked British radar stations, but the failure to mount a follow-up assault allowed the British to restore the stations' function within hours after the attacks. On August 15 the Germans thought that since most of the Royal Air Force (RAF) was gathered in the south, they would be able to attack in the north. They were wrong; RAF pilots destroyed 16 German fighters and 7 German bombers. The last attack on the radar stations was dubbed the “Hardest Day” by the British because it resulted in the most casualties on both sides. After this failed attack, Göring stopped the bombings of the radar stations.
